Dancer needs to be adopted/fostered by someone who is extremely experienced with dogs.UPDATE: I found Dancer's story in the magazine Dog Fancy. It says 'Originally from the jungles of Thailand the Thai Ridgeback can be fiercely protective of his family.' It went on the describe a story where a Thai suddenly shoved it's owner out of the way and when she corrected him - THEN she heard the distinctive rattle of a rattle snake. This is so how I perceive my Dancer. I have written before that he is the kind of dog who would give his life for you. I see that it is part of his heritage to be so brave & loyal. Their personality is listed as protective, energetic, loyal & attentive. That's Dancer to a T. It says that they should only be brushed and groomed occasionally because of their very short coat. TRD's clean themselves like a cat. Well, I haven't seen him do that but I know that his coat is incredibly short. It also says that the TRD is not for everyone. It's a tough breed for the average person to handle. They are agile athletes and are happiest in the sunshine where they can hunt moths or anything else that moves. They are great climbers and require a well fenced in yard. Well, we believe every dog requires that.We would only adopt Dancer to very, very experienced dog owners who take training seriously. Dancer wants to please you more then anything, and his sweet & gentle spirit enchanting but he needs daily training. He looks in your eyes --- really looks in your eyes trying to figure out what you want him to do. He is my sweet loving boy who wants to please. He does not do well at our 'Mingle with the Mutts' events because when everyone arrives, I think he gets confused with how to guard the situation. When it is just us, or a few volunteers, everyone gets to see what a dear, dear boy he is -- but in a crowd, he does do NOT well. He barks at all the dogs that he plays well with every day.So, the point is, TRD, are not for the light-hearted. They need a job and a family to protect. We hope that someone will come along and feel that he is exactly what they are looking for in a companion. I would love to see him in a home where perhaps the Dad works shift work and Mom is alone often. She would be able to feel safe because she would be. He would guard her or any family member with his life. We do not want to put him with children under 12 years old because he has shown no interest in small kids.UPDATE: Dancer has the shortest coat we have ever seen. No shedding problems with this pup!! Dancer is doing great and loving life! Day by day I fall more in love with him. He is the best of the best when it comes to rescue dogs. He knows, he truly knows --- that his life was spared and for that he is willing to give you his whole heart and soul. In my opinion, he is the kind of dog who would give his life for you if you were in danger. He has been with me for a few months now --- black dogs are just so much harder to place then any other color. Every day that I talk to him, pet him, smush his face and nose like I do to all of them, he just looks at me with sweet gentle eyes and says 'Thank YOU for that moment!' Geez, this boy is so special.I believe he may be heading toward being an alpha male. Simply put, that means he can live with submissive males or females. He loves the girls, especially our sweet and gentle Lizzy. They play and play and play all day long. He loves his toys, he LOVES balls, well, he just LOVES LIFE. We received this helpful message from the Thai people offering to help his adopters with any questions on this ancient breed. Please pass along my name for any questions etc. regarding this breed to the new owners. I will help them as much as possible.Cathleen A. Combs, Rescue CoordinatorAssociation of Thai Ridgeback Owners & Fanciers - 'http://www.atroworld.org'Dancer is such a handsome boy and has already learned so much while being in foster care. His leash manners get better and better and he will happily sit and stay for a treat or rub down. The cutest thing he does is his little happy dance when he is waiting for a special treat or to go out for a walk- He prances on his two front feet!! Dancer aims to please and is so happy whenever he gets any positive reinforcement for a job well done. He is an extra cute lovebug when he is tired and will smush his head into your chest, palm or armpit to snuggle until he dozes off. He is still young and so will need someone with much patience and energy to complete his training. He also needs to learn how to share as he is sometimes protective of his toys or treats. Dancer would be delighted to find a forever family who is active, dog savvy and good at reinforcing rules, boundaries and limitations. Will you be this very special little boy's rescue hero? The Thai rescue people sent us a link and said they would be happy to help anyone who adopts Dancer to understand his very special breed.UPDATE: I've renamed this beautiful boy Dancer. When he is happy and hungry he stands in front of me and tap dances with his front paws. So cute!!Dancer get's along well with everyone here (all L&F dogs need to get along with other dogs) and he is sweet, loving and will make a wonderful companion dog. I don't think he ever been indoors before because he was afraid of my TV and barked at it. We had him neutered and he is looking for that special family who will give him the love he craves and I know he will return it 10 fold!UPDATE: This extremely handsome boy arrived on our transport from VA. He is a Thai Ridgeback mix. He has a very short coat (cuts down on that pesky shedding issue) and his coat has a hint of blue to it. He is a very striking pup. Going to be big (maybe 50 pounds of pure muscle) but he has the kind of looks that people will stop you to admire him! Here is what the shelter had to say about him: Notes: Dancer is a delightful stray whose big ears seem to have led him to the SPCA! He is cute in that wacky way that only mutts have. He is a happy guy and loves attention and walks. His tail wags whenever someone walks by his run - he can't figure out why no one has yet realized that he is the best dog! Please read ALL our adoption policies BEFORE applying for a puppy or dog. If you need a fence for your dog, but are not permitted to have a physical fence, or chose not to, please visit our friends at Pet Stop. Mention that you saw them at our website. http://www.petstop.com/We abide by the Humane Association's recommendation. For ANY DOG adoption to have a relatively good chance of success, we believe a child should be 8 years old & up. We only adopt what we call our 'BONA-FIDE Kid Lovers to families with children.' Many dogs do not want to live with children. You should only adopt a dog who LOVES kids to be sure you are able to make a lifetime commitment to a dog.We also expect that if no one is home all day, arrangements will be made to provide the dog with at least (1) 'potty break' daily. This can be through a family member, neighbor, or Petsitting service. We know that it is impossible for us humans to 'hold it' for 8-10 hours, so we do not want our 'shelter kids' to be expected to do so.We have several Petsitting service companies that we can recommend: Fetch Pet Care - Serving New Castle County 302-322-8980For more info and other locations: www.fetchcare.comPet Valet services include transporting to and from Vet or grooming, dog walking and pet sitting, Pooper service - e-mail: leeterri2001@yahoo.com or call 302-369-3074Good Dog Animal Care - http://www.petsittinggooddog.com/Servicing the Kennett Square PA areaCall: (484)645-3130 - Meghan and Jackie HerbTLC Petsitting http://www.tlcpetsitting.net/ in MD
