Royce came out of a shelter where he was picked up as a stray. he is at least 9 yrs. of age if not older. He looked like 3 miles of bad road when he came in. He had flea bite dermatitus and had chewed himself up pretty good. He was very unsteady on his feet and we thought it might be from bad knees. He was not neutered and his coat was not the best.
We have dealt with the flea bite issues and he has stopped scratching and chewing on himself. His knees are fine. It turns out that he was functioning on only 5% thyroid - which could help contribute to his unsteadyness. We had him x-rayed while being neutered and it turns out he has some really bad arthritus along his spine - one spot near the shoulder blades, the rest of it goes from the back of his rib cage all the way to his hips. He is on some pain meds and is rapidly improving in both attitude and movement.
He is definately a Special Needs dog as he will have to be on thyroid medication for the rest of his life, as well as some kind of pain therapy for his bad back. He doesn't mind being picked up and hugged. He does demand attention and petting so he is a pretty friendly guy. He does make a good bed buddy.
Royce is in foster care in Southern Michigan.
