11/16/08- In addition Blade is now having issues adjusting to new dogs. He needs to be an ONLY DOG! He interacts well most of the time but may snap at them with no warning. 4/16/06 - This big boy has come back to us because of adjustment problems. Adoption restrictions have been set by our board that are as follows: Must be experianced with large dogs. Must be experianced with abuse/neglect cases and rehabilitation.(may include previous adoption experiance) Must be experianced/knowledgable about the Mastiff breed. Must understand that it will take TIME,TIME, and MORE TIME for this big boy to adjust and settle in, and his new family must be patient with him!Must have references that can validate the above experaince.
This boy becomes very attached and it is not healthy for him to be placed again unless the criteria are met. This boy is going to take some working with. He is an amazing dog and does very well with me, but the potential adopters must also understand that adjustment periods may be rough, and he is a Very Large dog thus it will take a special person who understands this to work with him. He is also an abuse/neglect case so his reactions are not the same to normal actions as most.. For instance when you are putting on your shoes and you lift them up he sometimes backs up and acts as though you may hit him.. I have never hit him and I know that his placement never did (she honestly loved him and he was great with her 4 year old but her teenagers- 2 girls- had never been raised around large dogs and were scared of him) but he still reacts as though I may. He also growls sometimes but it is not a mean growl.. he may do it when he wants to be close to you and you want him to do something else.. But I tell him to knock it off and he does... Being leader of the pack in a non-violent manner.. As he obviously experianced severe beatings and violence. He also become protective over the home after being here. I have to introduce new people and reassure him that they are ok to be in our home. This is all normal things for an abuse case.. so the knowledge and experiance of a person who has worked with such cases (or has adopted one previously) is a requirement.
This guy is such a big baby! He tends to be a womans dog! He has been neutered(this was a trip in itself as he kept breaking the stitches open and was stuck wearing a cone which HE HATED!), microchipped and had a pending adoption that fell through this week! (3/20)He is such a lover! He does tend to be clumsy.. but this is the VERY BIG DOG in him and people who are used to VERY BIG DOGS! Understand this.. He has been with us since the end of January and has come a very long way! He does have signs of abuse that tend to be with a man. He will only be adopted within the State of Michigan or Indiana so we are able to provide support in any way possible if need be.. He does warm up to men but is very apprehensive to begin with. He is not aggressive just very scared of men until he can trust them in some way. It only took him a few hours to warm up to my father! He is a females dog so if there is some young woman who is looking for an amazing protective companion he would be amazing! He has attached himself to me.. I would keep this one in a heartbeat!! (this has since healed 3/20)We are right now fighting an infection from some skin problems. He also has some 'hot spots' from being kenneled or beaten we are not sure. He is 3 years old!He is a great HUGE guy! Please email with any questions or if you would like an adoption appliction!
