Description:
Gordon is a young male GSP, @3 years old. He was found as a stray in rural, KY. He was in a crowded shelter, but the staff fell in love with him. He tested positive for heartworm, which means doom for a shelter dog. However, he has been undergoing treatment, and will soon be ready for adoption. He is a healthy, happy boy. Gordon is one of “those dogs” that makes an immediate impression. He has the kindest eyes, and a gentle spirit. He loves people, and although he’s a large boy, he’ll try to crawl right up on your lap to show his love for you. He is a strong boy, and we have been working on his leash manners. He does very well with a no-pull harness, but still pulls a bit with a regular collar. We will continue to work on that. He likes to play with other dogs (there are six others in his foster home). He greets other dogs with positive body language and a wagging tail. He’d probably do very well as an only dog, although I do think he’d very much enjoy a doggy companion, if he found the right match. Gordon loves nothing more than to go for a ride in the car, or for a long walk. He seems quite focused on small critters on walks (and the cats in his foster home), so a home without cats will be best for Gordon. His foster family does not have young children, although he would probably do well with children. We’d recommend older children, perhaps over the age of 8-10, since Gordon is unknown with youngsters. And, like a typical GSP, he plays exuberantly, and could accidentally knock over a smaller child. He sure wouldn’t mean to...he wouldn’t want to hurt anyone. Gordon bonds quickly with his people. We presume he was a “man’s dog” as he tends to gravitate most to men. He is bonded to his foster mom, however. But, if we’re out walking and there is a choice between a man and a woman, he will always go to the man first. He loves trucks, so we suspect he used to ride in a truck with his former owner. If he sees a truck, he’ll go stand by the door, waiting to get in. If the door is open, he’ll climb right into the truck, waiting to go for a ride. Put quite simply, Gordon is truly special. He has an endearing quality that hooks you from the get go. His sweet nature is beyond compare. We will surely miss him when he leaves, as he has been a true pleasure to have around. Gordon is taking well to basic commands. He knows sit and down, and will do both for a treat. He learned both commands quite quickly. He is eager to please. We have trained him to sit to get his collar on, and to sit prior to exiting his kennel. Gordon had a few accidents in the home upon arrival. He was not neutered yet, and a former foster girl had been in season when she arrived. So, her scent was still here. He responds quickly to a stern “no” and since the first few days, he has had no accidents in the house. Once he knows where to go to tell you to go out, he is trustworthy. Gordon will crate well. He is slightly reluctant to go in, and only quietly fusses for a few minutes. If he can’t see you, he will quiet down quickly, and take a nice nap. We haven’t left him alone in the home, so we don’t know how he would do in that situation. All in all, Gordon is as near a perfect dog as you can get. He still needs some polish on his manners, since he’s a strong boy, he’ll need his new family to continue with his obedience training. With consistency and structure, he will thrive. He may just be your “once in a lifetime” dog. He really is THAT special. He is now in a loving foster home in Ironton, OH. Transport can be arranged for adoption
