Description:
VICTIM OF NEGLECT. Axel is a purebred chocolate lab who was born in February 2008. When he was backed over by a visitor, his owners failed to get him medical attention. They left him lying in the yard for 8 weeks before Save the Strays learned of him. By that time, his broken back had healed, leaving him paraplegic. We tried putting him in a canine cart (dog wheelchair), but Axel did not adapt to it. Instead, he has re-learned to walk and is now even able to run (see video at our website: www.savethestrays.org). His back legs are extended, so his gait is stiff, but he is increasingly mobile each day. Axel is a wonderful, loving, smart and gentle dog who plays well with other dogs and loves people. In every sense but his ability to walk, he is the perfect dog. He needs very little in the way of accommodation - just a ramp or assistance (rear-end harness or other lifting aid) getting up steps. If you have prior dog experience and a good vet reference, please consider making Axel part of your family.
