Vaquero Estimated Birthday June 29, 2007 Vaquero was picked up as a stray on the Isleta Pueblo and brought into the Valencia County shelter. The Valencia County shelter contracts with the municipalities of Bosque Farms, Peralta, Los Lunas, Belen and Isleta to impound their stray dogs and cats because those areas to not have a shelter facility. Over 6,000 animals have been sheltered at the Valencia County shelter over the past year. 60% of them are euthanized because of the lack of space or the animals are sick. Vaquero was almost one of them. He was held for the three business day holding period but broke with kennel cough; similar to a cold in children in daycare. However, since it is highly contagious to other dogs it has been deemed a reason to euthanize otherwise healthy dogs. If allowed to stay at the shelter he could cause other dogs to become ill and none of the would be adopted. Rescue is the only option. It took three weeks for him to recover from the virus. Since then he has been with our other foster dogs and is an all-around little Mexican cowboy. If you are looking for an active, tough little fellow, Vaquero would love to become a part of your posse. ADOPTION FEE $200
