Description:
The Australian Shepherd, or Aussie as it is known, is a medium sized dog with a lean, muscular body and coarse, medium-to-long coat. The tail is very short or missing in most cases. The Aussie is extremely intelligent, easily trained, obedient and very responsive, seeming to know exactly what is required of it. It makes a good watchdog. It adapts to urban living but is an energetic working dog and needs plenty of vigorous exercise to stay in shape. This dog has few health problems but can suffer from hip dysplasia and eye problems. The Aussie is sensitive to some heartworm preventatives. He/She will need to be neutered/spayed by his/her new owner. He/She is eligible for a ShelterCare Insurance special offer as a Petfinder.com adoption and it is recommended that all newly adopted animals see a veterinarian as soon as possible for a checkup. Surgery, vaccinations, worming, flea treatment, heartworm testing and prevention can be discussed at this time. This dog can do well in a city home with a fenced-in yard but, because of its energy level would do better in a country setting.
