Carmella is one of the sweetest, friendliest cats her foster mom has ever met. She is very adaptable to people, places, and locations. She came to Whiskers with her four kittens when the person who had been caring for them outside feared it was getting too cold for them to stay safe. Carmella will jump right up on your lap and stay there as long as you let her. When Carmella was spayed it was noted that she had a heart murmur. We took her to the cardiologist and discovered that she has feline hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM). Her current health is good and she does not show any severe effects of the disease at this point. However, she has been started on medication and will have to remain on it for the rest of her life. After a couple weeks on the medication a follow-up exam was done and the heart murmur was no longer noticeable, an indication that the medication is working. At this point, though, the rate of possible progression of the disease cannot be determined since we have only just discovered it. A re-check exam in 6 months will help to more precisely determine her long-term prospects. We would like to place her in a permanent home where she can have a stable and stress-free environment.
