My name is Nikko. I was born in May of 2006, to a feral mom near New Castle, DE. One day in early June, a kind lady looked out at her driveway and saw what she thought was a black piece of paper or cloth. Looking closer, she saw my ears and realized I was a tiny, pathetic little kitten near death. I was all alone, except for the flies buzzing around me. I was very dehydrated and hungry, but the most horrible part was a large nasty wound at the base of my tail that had become infested with maggots. The wound was so extensive and I was so frail that everyone thought I would surely die. But hey…I’m a survivor!
I look different because I was born with some abnormalities which may have been caused by an infection my mom had before I was born. It is possible my birth mother rejected me because of this or she may even have been too sick to care for me. The muscles that control my eyes are damaged and I have a condition called “nystagmus” in which my eyes seem to drift up involuntarily. For the first 6 months of my life, my third eyelid (the white membrane) did not retract well and covered half my eye and obscured my vision. I’ve had surgery that has given me a more normal field of vision, but my corneas are damaged, and I will always have a significant vision deficit.
I am still playful and I love the company of other cats who are not aggressive. I am negative for both FIV and Feline Leukemia. Because of my limited sight, a home with lots of activity, small children and loud noises is inappropriate. I would thrive in a quiet home with adoring human companions - I 'm affectionate, gentle and sociable. Just check out my gorgeous velvety black and white tuxedo! You’d never guess I literally came from the gutter! If you’re interested in a true one of a kind character to share his life with you, I’m the one. Would you like to fill out an Adoption Application?
