Buddy is a white ringneck dove, born from sadly overbred parents. Though he is in great physical health, he is lucky, as most of his siblings born prior to his rescue were sickly. He hasn't escaped his poor genetics entirely, however, and after his first molt some of his feathers did not grow back over his crop and under his wings. He doesn't pluck, they just never came back. This is an aesthetic problem, and the vets have said that there is nothing wrong with him. He can fly very well and enjoys time out of his cage! He knows 'Step up!' and his name, though he is like other doves in his general disinterest in people.
Buddy has a mate, Daphne, who is a wild color pattern ringneck dove. She is more shy than he because she was rescued a little later in her life, but is still friendly.
Doves make beautiful noises and are fun to watch, though interaction is relatively limited in comparison to parrot-type birds. Their care is relatively simple and they are hardy, but should be kept inside only, especially with Buddy's missing feathers. Doves make great first birds or pets for people who do not have the time to devote to a parrot. They eat pelleted food such as Lafeber's cockatiel pellets supplemented with fortified parakeet seeds, with oyster grit to aid in digestion since they do not chew their food. They need a cage that is wide moreso than tall, because they are flying and roosting birds and not climbing birds. The large cage they are currently in may be purchased from the rescue for $50.
This pair is fertile but will ONLY be adopted with a strictly enforced, notarized contract completely disallowing the hatching of eggs from these birds. Aside from potential poor genes being passed on to any offspring from Buddy's bird mill parents, there are far too many doves with nowhere to go because rescues rarely take them. PLEASE do not inquire about these birds if you have any intention of breeding them! We will pursue any violation of this agreement with legal force.
