Your cat has vanished from inside the house. He either got outside when you opened the door and you weren't quick enough to catch him, or he
- Hi, A very wounded cat showed up on my door step. He seems to have been beaten by a dog or another animal. On his front paw, he has a large bite wound or cut that goes directly around his leg, just above his actual paw. He can not use it, and it is VERY swollen. He is very strong and it seems to have happen a while ago. Is it a big limb that must come off? Or will it natural rot off? What do i do, without taking it to a vet.
- I have a kitten that was born in July of this year just wondering if i could have him fixed now or does he have to be 9 months to a year?
- I have a 12 yr old tabby cat has been coughing for at least 6 months off and on but is otherwise in good health. When he coughs he sounds like he has bronchitis or the croup. He's eating and drinking fine, but lays around most of the time.
- Can a cat be spayed while in heat?
- I have a 3year old male cat with an enlarged heart who is not fixed. I would like to have him fixed for he is peeing all over and attacked our other male cat. Can this be done with his heart condition?
- I have a "domestic shorthair" I guess you could say. I got her from the pound because she was abandoned at a very very young age. She's about a year old and she's... just weird. I love her to death but she's almost bipolar. She's definitely not a lapcat and that's fine but she'll sleep on the bed with me and sit on the couch and then there are times when she'll crawl under the bed or run away from everyone. And then there are times when she's biting everyone and stalking everything in sight. She's a hunter, there's no doubt about that. If it moves, she'll kill it. She's very large for her age. Her head is very small for her body, and she doesn't seem to like the fact that she has a tail... it's either sticking straight up or between her legs and she'll chase it into submission often (chewing at it frequently). She's got tabby markings and some leopard spots on her sides, mostly grey. I don't have a problem with her temperment, though my roommate does, as she's too smart for her own good. She'll open cabinets to get out food and eat it in the living room. She's almost figured out the doorknobs. I was wondering if she could be some kind of wild cat cross (her litterbox smells like a public bathroom ewww). That wouldn't surprise me in the least. I grew up on a farm and had cats all my life, mostly strays and adoptions, but none as smart or as peculiar as she is. What IS she?
- my cat born 0ct 25, 08......has a severe case of diarrhea~~ I have taking him to our local vet, & it seems its a trial & error situation.. now he put the cat on a special diet food.. but he still has bad runs.... I am at my wits end.. can you help me & my cat.. thank you
- My four year old female cat is leaking small smelly droplets from her bottom can you help!
- I have a 12 year old miniature schnauzer. She started dragging her hind leg and is now holding it up and won't put pressure on it. I have felt up and down it but she doesn't seem to be in pain. Could this be a stroke?
- My cat vomits right after he eats. Like not even a minute later. The food does not even have a chance to digest. He eats really quickly and I do limit the amount I put in his bowl. He is on dry food and has always been. There have not been any changes in what he gets. What is causing this?
- I have a cat that was a stray. We took it in, had her declawed (front only), and had her neutered. She has been an inside cat for about 2 years. We now have a babe on the way, and no longer want the cat inside. If I take her to a shelter, she probably won't be adopted because she doesn't take to strangers very well - bad 1st impression. Most shelters will put the cat to sleep if it is not adopted after a given time. Would it be inhumane to just put her outside without her front claws?
- My cat goes crazy every time I feed our fish. She likes to eat the fish flakes I give them. Will this hurt her? She cries and cries every time I open the fish food jar until I give her a few flakes.
- Do you have any information at all on the treatment of Pericardial-peritoneal Hernias??? I am desperate, someone i care for very much has just found out that her cat has this condition. She will pay anything to cure the problem. If anyone has ANY INFO at all, please send it to me so that I can forward on any positive input of stories of success. Clay has had the condition from birth but it has only just been fully realized. She is really devastated. Please help. : (
- can a cat get sick from a flea collar?
- Hello, Doctor! I'll try to make this as concise as possible. Right after Thanksgiving, my 4 year old kitty, Dylan, began acting EXTREMELY lethargic. He was sleeping, literally, 23 hours a day and simply could not be bothered. I would wake him up and he would eat and drink well, and I would take him to the litter box where he used the box fine. Then he would go right back to his chair and go to sleep. He also struck me as very stiff--especially in the hind end--and he was reluctant to go up and down the stairs or to jump up on furniture. I was worried about him, but because he wasn't showing any other symptoms aside from lethargy and stiffness, I chalked it up to a side-effect of the intense stress he'd experienced while I was away over Thanksgiving. What had happened was that some feral cats got into my basement (they tore through the insulation around the heating ducts) and into my house. They terrorized my two (totally indoor) cats (Dylan & Chaplin) and urinated all over the basement floor. The girl who was taking care of my cats told me about this, and the minute I got home, I checked both cats over very carefully for any wounds, because I was extremely worried that there had been a fight and the possible transmission of a disease such as FIV. By the time I got home, Dylan was already acting lethargic. Chaplin seemed completely fine. After about a week, Dylan turned the corner and was his normal, active, cheerful self again. I debated off and on as to whether or not to take him to the vet, but because he was still eating and didn't have an respiratory symptoms or anything, I decided to just wait and see. Like I said, he eventually returned to his 100% normal self. Fast forward a few weeks. I went away for Christmas vacation and while my boyfriend was here most of the time, he left the cats in the care of a friend for five days. The feral cats, by the way, were no longer able to get into the basement, because I secured the area around the duct work! When I arrived back home on January 4th, I noticed my 3 year old kitty, Chaplin, seemed a little "off." My boyfriend told me that he had just started acting lethargic, and we decided to keep an eye on him. Like Dylan, he was sleeping ALL the time, but still had a fine appetite and litterbox habits (when woken up). He also seemed stiff, but perhaps stiffer than Dylan. Yesterday, I grew very worried because he was so lethargic he didn't even seem to want to sit up. He also seemed a little "glazed." I took him to the vet and he had a fever of 105!! The vet ran a CBC and diagnostic panel, all of which came back completely fine. Chaplin (who was very upset!) wouldn't walk for the vet, but the vet said he was fairly certain the stiffness/reluctance to move was from how terrible the high fever must have been making him feel. He decided to start him on antibiotics and admit him overnight. This morning, after one dose the antibiotics, the fever hadn't gone down. The vet game him his morning dosage, and we checked his temp at noon. His temperature had dropped to 104, and he seemed more alert. Because it was the weekend, the vet told me I should take him home where I could be with him and monitor his temperature (I know how) and give him his medicine--essentially the same care he'd get at the vet's office. He said it was especially good that Chaplin was eating and drinking so well (he ate all of his dry food as well as 1/2 a can of wet food in the vet's office!). I took Chaplin's temp around 4:00 and it was down to 103.2. I'm going to check it once more before bed. I didn't sleep at all last night, because I keep hearing horror stories about cats with unexplained fevers dying of FIP. I asked the vet about FIP, but he said Chaplin wasn't exhibiting any of the other symptoms, and that he had no reason to believe that that was what was going on. I felt a little better, but I'm still worried. I'm supposed to take Chaplin in on Monday for a followup exam, but in the meantime, I'm kind of driving myself crazy playing the "what-if" game... I guess I have a couple of questions... 1). Is it bad that we haven't figured out what caused Chaplin's fever? Do YOU think I should be worried about FIP? 2). Is it okay that, despite the fact his fever is coming down, Chaplin is still sleeping SO much. He seems to be sleeping very deeply and peacefully, and he's never been that extraordinarily active, but I feel like he should start perking up soon (even though he's only been on antibiotics for about 24 hours). 3). Is it possible that Dylan contracted something and passed it on to Chaplin, who just seems to have it worse than Dylan did? Their symptoms are SO similar, I can't help but retain that theory. 4). Is the fact that the fever is going down with antibiotic therapy a good sign that this probably ISN'T anything other than some odd illness, rather than something horrible like FIP? Sorry for the novel...but I just feel so confused not having a NAME to put to this problem. The vet (who is normally very doom and gloom) seemed surprisingly nonchalant, and just told me that sometimes cats get high fevers for no apparent reason. I guess I just have a hard time believing that there's not something seriously wrong. I think that if I knew what it was, I would feel much better. Thanks so much for any advice you can offer.
- Does it hurt for a kitten to be in heat...how long do cats /kittens stay in heat if you cant afford to get them fixed for life? and how many days are they in heat in a cycle
- I work at a prison and there are several stray cats that we feed. We have been able to trap some of them and have them spayed or neutered and found homes for them. There is one female that we have not been able to trap and she keeps having kittens. I have noticed that she seems to be blind in one eye. When she turns her head a certain way you can see that her eye reflects strangely. Is there a certain eye disorder that she could have developed, or could it be an injury? Also there is a large tomcat that seems to have a similar problem. His face seems swollen and his eyes are squinty and he doesn't appear to be able to see very well. Also do female cats go through menopause? Do they lose the ability to get pregnant at a certain age?
- Hello Doctor, I live in the Tampa, Fl area and I tried to order "Advantage Multi Cat, 5-9lb" from Doctor's Foster and Smith but when they called my vet for the script they did not respond to the script request. I called my vet personally and was told that this Company is "not on their list..." of appropriate pharmacy's because they get their medicines from questionable places "like Australia,...etc" The price from F&S is 28 dollars cheaper then my longtime vet and even though they (my vet) agreed to discount me $11 dollars, this is still well below what I would have received from F&S. $11.00 vs approx. $28.00 sounds highly suspect to me. I called F&S back and told them what my vet's office said and they said that they are FDA approved and registered in all 50 states and are held to the same standards as any Veterinarian's office would be held to. Can you please tell me WHICH ONE of these two is giving me the run around. I have my own ideas anyway. I really need help because my cat needs medical attention every two months and it is expensive. These are difficult times and I really need to protect my cat and also save everywhere I can!! Thank you for your time. MG
- My neighbor and I have been taking care of a cat which was left after owners moved out of our complex. Last night my neighbor noticed a "lump" on the cat's head, which turned out to be an abscess. We "drained" the abscess and applied rubbing alcohol and topical antibiotic cream. He is eating today and the wound does not appear to be swollen. Neither of us can afford the vet bills for an animal that is not ours (I already have two cats with kidney issues!). Are there additional signs we should look for before taking the feline to the vet?
- Is it safe to use straight peroxide on a cat's chin to treat acne?
- We found a cat outside and noticed she was pregnant. I didn't want to leave her out there because it is winter her and it gets below zero quite often. Early this morning I found vomit and she has been arching her back whenever she is up. I don't know how far along she is, but I have been able to feel the kittens move for two weeks and it seems like they are farther back. Is there any way to know when labor will start besides taking her temperature?

- My Approx. 4 year old spayed female cat. Mizz Kitti wandered into our yard and hearts about 2yrs. ago and never left. She has recently had some urinary propblems which required her to take kitty Amoxicillan. We thought she was better and now she has some little sore spots on her backand sides. They drain a little bit. I did put Flea Powder on all 3 cats approx 1- 2 months ago. The other cats are ok. Should I take her back to the Vet ? Should I be worried ? Is this a symptom that her urinary problem still with her and/or getting worse? Thankyou - Mizz Kitti's Mommy PS_ I am a Cancer patient on a limited income.
- I've recently noticed that my cat (he's less than a year old) has not been eating as often, seems rather sluggish (he's not running around the house anymore), and seems to not be going to the bathroom as often either. I think I need to take him to the vet, but I want a good idea of what may be wrong before I bring him in so they do not do a bunch of unnecessary tests. Thank you
- What can help my maine coon cat who is often trying to cough up furballs.
- Is it okay to give cats some sweet fruit juice (from fruit salad), icecream, or any other sweets? If so -- how much is acceptable? Is okay to give cats fruit from fruit salad -- my cats seem to like eating it when I cut some up in small pieces. My cats are 2 1/2 yrs. old and there are four of them -- from the same litter.
- One of my cats is approx 18 years old and he has a barfing problem. He has always barfed throughout his life, however, in the last year his barfing has increased. Sometimes to more than once per day. I've adjusted his food intake which has seemed to help. I feed him both hard (1/4 cup twice a day which my other cats also pick at) and soft food (1 tbsp once per day). His barf is usually unprocessed food and I've watched him and he tends to just swallow his food, not chew it and break it down. I know he is old, but he is still seems full of life, but I am worried that there may be other problems. Is it just that his teeth may be bothering him and that's why he isn't chewing properly or could he have real stomach issues? Is there a soft/hard style food that would be good to try? (not canned stuff). Help!!
- My cat has a hole about half an inch wide to the inside of her front left leg. It goes fairly deep -- at least half an inch plus down can be seen without any effort. It appears to give her no pain, so I was wondering if it could be a parasite? There is a little nub on the edge of the hole that is roughly the size and shape of a tick. This is what I felt when I picked her up that alerted me to the hole. The hole is not bleeding but the fur around it appears wet, from pus or from her licking herself. Do you know what it could be?
- My cat gave birth 7 weeks ago. She had a healthy appetite when the kittens were born, but now that they are gone she has gone off her food. She won't eat and her breasts are all swollen and hard. Is this natural?
- I think my cat has the flu. I don't know, but she is sneezing alot. I want to know how I can help her. She started sneezing two days ago. Can you tell me what to do?
- I have a stray cat that I have been feeding for 2 months. Suddenly it has started drooling and he looks like he hurt his mouth. What could cause this? Could it be an insect bite or something else? I don't know what to do for him.
- My cat has been vomiting for over a month. Now he is peeing on furniture, pooping on the bed and trying to go in the flower pot instead of his cat box. He looks sick and is not his normal self. I feed him urinary tract Friskies and hairball gel for that, but nothing is working.
- My 3 year old cat Dalton i think is having anal gland problems. He cries and stomps around if you try touching his back or close to the anus. I keep checking to make sure nothing is wrong but obviously there is. There's feces still in the anus and if i try to clean it out he began gripping onto things and complaining as if it hurts. I'm don't know if he's constipated or not. he holds onto things and whimper. i plan on taking him to the vet as soon as i can because i don't know what to do at this point. :-(

- My daughter has a 6 month old kitten. She took it a while back for a check up and shots and everything was fine. Just recently we noticed one of its eyes is slightly swelled. It has a little discharge , the eye doesn't look bad but the lower rim of the eyelid is a little red. Is there anything she can do as far as over the counter meds? - Abby, my 3.5 yo spayed female cat, has a bladder infection & diarrhea. Own 1 other cat. Vet's office has recently had a change in drs. New female dr we saw Mon & Wednesday dislikes Abby due to growling & hissing while she's at the vet & a history of biting as a kitten, & is "uncooperative" (dr's word). Abby & Daisy have never gotten along well but tolerate each other. Abby has had what I call "goopy eye" where her left eye drips fluid. Former dr prescribed Viralys for the eye & amytriptyline for behavior (which works very well). Wondering if bladder infection & diarrhea can be related to the eye problem for which Viralys was prescribed. Stress? We moved in Sept. I can't afford the emergency vet & this new dr at regular vet is no help as long as she dislikes Abby. Any thoughts?
- I tried using tea tree oil on my cat who keeps licking a spot on her belly and leg making it raw and she didn't lick it for a week and we also put a cone on her when we're not able to watch her but yesterday I left home and forgot to put her cone on and she licked it off then vomited early this morning once. She has been eating and acting normal but I read that it can be very toxic to cats if ingested . I am not able financially to take her to a vet at this time and was wondering if there is something I should give her?
- I have 3 10wk old puppies. One got sick and vomited several times on Sunday and recovered by the next morning. The other 2 puppies got up this morning as usual and started to eat when I fed them at 7:30am but did not finish their food. By 8am both were vomiting clear bile. They continued this way until we went to open our store at 10am. When we arrived at the store they laid down to sleep. It is now 3:20 and one of the puppies is still sleeping but seems to be resting and breathing okay. The other puppy got up to pee and poop. Her poop was all light brown liquid with an ending little clump that included grass and a 1/4" white worm. They have been wormed twice already. Do you have any suggestions?
- I have a 5 month old female, not spayed yet, and whenever see comes near me she pees a little, also whenever I try to pet her. She does not do this with my roommate, I am female and he is male. What can I do?

- Our Vet diagnosed our dog, a four year old Welsh Corgi, as having "reverse sneezes" which he has quite often. He really did not explain exactly what causes these spells and if they can be cured or what to do when the dog has these bouts? I would appreciate any information you can provide to me. Thank you! Delores Walmer email: dawalmer@verizon.net
- I have a Shoo-Poo. She is almost a year old, weighs 10 pounds. She has been vomiting about once a day for a couple days. Other than this she seems fine, she plays and acts normal. Should I take her to the vet just to be on the safe side? Thank you.

- Is tylenol safe to give to dogs?
- I have an 11yr old Jack Russell. She has just recently starting to have seizures. We have been to the vet who has not indicated epilespy and discouraged neurological exam due age. We have been also told that she may have parasites in her brain that are difficult to remove. Our dog's seizures start with nose tremors, drools, shakes and last less than a minute. She has had 4 about 3hours apart. Then none for a few weeks. She DOES NOT urinate or deficate during seizures. Since the episodes she has walks around in circles, favoring one side--the left . She bumps into things and seem to loose balance when she focuses on something. She does not seem to react to things as she use to. Not excited when we arrive home. Interestingly, she hasn't barked since the seizures, and when in situations upsetting to her she manages to make a weak howl but not bark. To compound to her situation, she has been diagnosed with degeration in her left eye and cataracts in the right. Could the eye lens issue and focusing cause the loss of balance? We have been treating her for vertigo, parasites and seizures homeopathically with help of our holistic vet.

Otherwise she seems to be full of energy but is hungry all the time. Normaly she eats once a day (for the last 10) I gave her Drontal and Frontline. She doesn't seem to have worms, ticks, or flees. - I guess my main question would be what diseases could cause a bubbly itchy skin rash and a red belly. My dog is seeing an internist now, but they aren't really sure what is going on. They suspect autoimmune, but I have been searching on the internet for any autoimmune that causes that. She has been on different steriods for days and now just put on antibiotics as well and she seems to be getting a little closer to better...the only concern is her low blood platelets and proteins and her a little more than high white blood cell count. I did pay for a skin biopsy and will have results maybe monday. I just am so lost. She is a baby to me and was thinking of any suggestions I can toss their way.
- I adopted a beagle about 6 months ago. She will be staying at my parents house for next week and half. She has been to this house before, but this time I am not with her. The past 3 days she has been there she has urinated on the floor. In the past she has been treated for incontinence with Proin, but it hasn't posed a problem in a while. My parents have been taking her out at least 6 times a day, and when she is with me she can go up to 8 hours without being let out or an accident. What might be causing this behavior and how can I prevent it in the future? Thank you!
- My dog has been to three emergency rooms since Thanksgiving. She had what looked like hives all over and her stomach has a blood red rash on it. - I’m having some problems with my dog he is black Lab Mix. He keeps licking and biting his paws especially around the nail beds (there are no visible deformities or growths, but the skin between the toes will sometimes become swollen and a oily to puss like discharge) and also seems to be scratching his muzzle excessively causing some light bald spots, here is a little history on him; 04/08 took him to the Vet for the above; they did a scraping from between his toes and muzzle. The Vet said that it showed that he had some kind of hair follicle mite and suggested 6 monthly treatments of Promeris for dogs. Though he disliked having it applied more and more (it seemed like it really irritated him for a few hours after application) he stopped scratching his muzzle (hair grew back), stopped biting his paws and the licking decreased a lot. 11/08 The biting, licking and scratching returned with a vengeance, we went back to the Vet (different Vet same office) and told him what was going on. He didn’t seem to be too concerned because his paws did not look to bad, actually looking back it seemed like he didn’t examine them too closely but took a scraping from the top of his paw and said that it showed no mites like before. He suggested that it might be some type of food allergy (he was on a low grain food diet for over a year) and suggested a grain free food also to use Benadryl 50mg & Cephalexin 500mg if the paws looked like they were getting infected. We have changed his diet to grain free dry food and sweet potato & fish can food 6 weeks ago but there has been no improvement. Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated and or do you think I should push to have the Vet do another scraping this time between the toes or around the nail beds, thanks Mitch itchie694@sbcglobal.net
- I have a Hungarian Viszla that has numerous problems currently...she first had these weird episodes where she would fall over and couldn't get up. She would lose control of her bladder and pee during this time. They were lasting only about 15 seconds and then she would get right back up and act fine. My vet started her on Phenobarbital for seizures. Shortly after I started her on the meds she started bloating up. I had scheduled her to be spayed and took her in for that appointment. When the vet cut her open fluid poured out of her abdomen. She came through the surgery ok, but was still draining fluid. My vet then put her on Lasix to help absorb the fluid and we stopped the seizure meds. She told us at that time that the previous blood tests had shown low protein levels. It has been about a week and she now looks like skin and bones except for her belly area, which looks like she is taking on fluid again. In the past two days she has had 2 of those weird spells/seizures as well. Any suggestions???...

- I have a 9 month old F2 Goldendoodle. He high energy but pretty well behaved for his age. When the weather is good we will walk for 1 1/2 to 3 hours a day. He can run loose so he covers a lot more miles than I do. When the weather is bad I run him on a treadmill for an hour or even a little more at about 5 miles per hour. He gets on easy and runs without a leash. I can even leave the room for a short time and he continues to run. My question is, am I pushing him to hard on the treadmill?
