The job of these long legged terriers was to kill the fox once it was found in a foxhunt. The two varieties of coat were developed to meet the need in different regions. This stealthy killing terrier is stalwart in temperament and willful. They require a gentle but firm owner and prefer to be the only dog in a household. They are good with older children but can be aggressive and nip small children, other dogs and animals.
Fox Terriers have two types of coats: smooth and wire. The smooth coat is composed of short, flat, densely set, strong hair. The wire coat is a broken coat with medium length hair that has a firm and wiry texture. The smooth coated Fox Terrier requires no grooming, but the wire-coated variety requires professional stripping to keep it in good condition. Fox Terriers are predominantly white with color spots on their body, head and ears.
