Test Used for centuries by the ?Khoikoi? tribes of South Africa, the Rhodesian Ridgeback is said to be fiercely loyal to their masters, brave and hardy. Developed as a protector and hunting dog, they are courageous, and fearless enough to track and keep at bay even ?The King of Beasts,? the mighty lion. This dog makes a good guard dog and can be good but very protective family pets. They are not recommended for families with very small children, and need ongoing obedience control. This dog needs daily exercise to keep it happy.

The coat of a Rhodesian Ridgeback is short, dense, sleek and glossy to the touch. It has a distinctive symmetrical ridge on its back, unique to this breed. The hair on this ridge is slightly raised and grows counter to the nature flow of the rest of the hair on its back.

A Rhodesian Ridgeback is good with their immediate family, but can be overly protective and not at all trustworthy around strangers.

They combined Danes, Mastiffs, Greyhounds, Bloodhounds, Terriers, and other breeds with the half-wild Hottentot hunting breed to create the Ridgeback.ÿÿ (Credit: AKC.org)
