This breed was developed to help in the pursuit and hunting of bears. Known to have a superior scenting ability this dog is able to find a bear in its winter den, it is currently used with forestry departments to scare bears away from populated areas.
They have a double coat. The topcoat is moderately short, straight, and stiff. The undercoat is soft and dense. Occasional brushing is required to keep this coat clean. Karelian Bear Dogs are black and white with distinctive markings.
