This breed has been used for eons to guard precious items. Originally this dog was used as a small hunter in Africa and often was traded with the Chinese for goods. In China, however, the bred almost became extinct when communism took over because it became a source of meat. This breed is very expressive and has a loving personality. They love to be close to their owners and to be cuddled. Their flexible paws allow them to actually pick up and hold objects with their feet.
A Chinese Crested dog is hairless except for tufts on their head, feet and tail. However, the ?Powder Puff? version, or coated Chinese Crested, has a rather long, soft, silky coat. Brushing is needed on an ongoing basis for Powder Puffs. The hairless variety may require an application of cream (or sunscreen) to keep their skin healthy, or protected from the elements. The skin color is pink to black and can be spotted or solid. Powder Puffs can be white or any color.
