My neighbor and I have been taking care of a cat which was left after owners moved out of our complex. Last night my neighbor noticed a "lump" on the cat's head, which turned out to be an abscess. We "drained" the abscess and applied rubbing alcohol and topical antibiotic cream. He is eating today and the wound does not appear to be swollen. Neither of us can afford the vet bills for an animal that is not ours (I already have two cats with kidney issues!). Are there additional signs we should look for before taking the feline to the vet?

If you were able to clean up the abscess and there is no longer any drainage or swelling, the cat may do ok.  In an idea world, the kitty should be receiving antibiotics, but if you cannot do it, and the swelling remains resolved, than just keep an eye on him.  My feeling is that it will likely return, and it is likely due to a bite, which means antibiotics are the best way to go in addition to draining it. So... if you see it return, please seek veterinary attention, as your great efforts, although good, may not be good enough. Best of luck,
