My daughter has a 6 month old kitten. She took it a while back for a check up and shots and everything was fine. Just recently we noticed one of its eyes is slightly swelled. It has a little discharge , the eye doesn't look bad but the lower rim of the eyelid is a little red. Is there anything she can do as far as over the counter meds? She can't afford another Vet bill right now unless she has no other choice. Thank you

Bravo for seeing the vet for a checkup! As you know however, all we can tell from that is that there was no major issue at that time. The eye problem today is not likely a big problem. It is possible that it got dirt or became irritated from something, however, I obviously cannot be certain. Things to watch for at this time are runny nose and sneezing, as that could mean that you are seeing the beginning of an upper respiratory infection in your kitten. If the redness worsens or more discharge develops or if the kitten is rubbing the eye (which likely indicates discomfort), you really need to seek attention of a vet. There are not over the counter eye medications for cats, and even if there were, without seeing the problem, would not want to make any guesses. I hope this helps and that the swelling resolves in the next 12 hours. If not, please see your vet!
