My 8 wk old puppy has a lump on her belly button, could this be a hernia and if so, what could I do?

The lump you are seeing is most likely an umbilical hernia. It is caused by incomplete closure of the belly prior to birth and is usually quite harmless. Typically fat will move across the hole and block it and also result in a bump. Sometimes, if the hole is larger than 3-4 mm it can have the potential to trap intestines and can be dangerous. These holes can be easily repaired at the time of spay or neuter. Your vet should have a good idea of what is going on when you have your puppy check up! Best of luck!
