I have a 19 lb mini dashhound. He has a sprained back. He is also constipated. I had picked him at the vet yesterday. He had spent the night there. They give me medicine to give him. An antiinflamatory med. and a ulcer medicine. He still hasn't gone poo. He is also dehydrated and had been running fever. Is there anything else that I could possibly do for him.

I am so sorry to hear about your pup. I am also very concerned about the symptoms you describe. Dachshunds usually do not get "back sprains" more commonly and actually very common in the breed, we see spinal cord and intervertebral disc disease. Here is a resource with more information than you ever dreamed of knowing: http://www.dachshund-dca.org/discbook.html

What that means in English is that they have discs in between their back bones that act like shock absorbers, and often, in Dachshunds, the disc material hardens and moves outside of the area between the back bones and hits the spinal cord. The spinal cord carries all of the nerves from the brain to the limbs and rest of the body. When the disc material hits the cord, it not only damages it, but also causes severe pain and can result in either reversible or irreversible nerve damage. It is not uncommon that it can result in paralysis.

So, I am not telling you this to scare you, only to inform you that things may be more serious than you think. The treatment for this is medication as you have been prescribed, but also, just as important or more important is STRICT REST. No running, jumping, playing, stairs, or excessive walking. I usually recommend strict cage rest. You should also be aware that surgery is often necessary to correct the problem.

The other issues that concern me are that your pup cannot defecate, has a fever and is dehydrated. Did your vet give you any ideas why this may be? The difficultly defecating may be due to dehydration combined with pain when attempting to defecate or squat. Can he urinate normally? Fever is not common either, so I would be sure to follow up with your vet again 24 hours after discharge from the hospital or if he is unable to walk properly at any point. I sincerely hope this helps you and anyone else that is reading this!
